If your brakes aren't working correctly, you don't have control over your car. This is a dangerous situation, as it can result in an accident. As your local Ford dealer, we want to keep you and your vehicle safe. We can help if you need a brake repair, and these are some of the signs that there's a problem. more Hard Brake Pedal When you step on the brakes, you'll feel resistance, and this resistance mounts as you depress the pedal. This is perfectly normal and shows that your brakes are working correctly. If your brake pedal provides so much resistance that it barely moves, you have a brake problem. This extreme resistance is a sign that your brake power booster is damaged. The brake power booster provides the extra pressure needed to activate your brakes. It provides 10x normal strength to force pressurized brake fluid into the hoses. This unit uses a vacuum to power itself, and any damage to the booster can break this vacuum. Without this vacuum, the booster won't work, and your pedal will barely move. Our technicians can replace the booster if it's failed. Soft Brake Pedal If your pedal is soft, it will go almost to the floor when you step on it. The force exerted by the brake pedal releases brake fluid into the hoses. This brake fluid provides the hydraulic power needed to operate your brake. A lack of resistance from the brakes is a sign there's a problem with the brake fluid or a blockage in the brake hoses. If you've smelt a nasty burning chemical smell before the pedal became soft, your brake fluid may have overheated. Brake fluid is under pressure, which produces heat. If this heat is allowed to increase too much, for example, if you've been riding your brakes for a while, the fluid will overheat. Hot brake fluid will burn, producing a bad smell. The burnt fluid doesn't provide hydraulic power, and your brake pedal will go soft. Your Car Pulls When You Brake Healthy brakes will bring your car to a controlled stop. If you apply the brakes and your car pulls to one side, your brakes have a problem. The reason your car pulls to the left or right is caused by a failure of your brakes on one side of your car. The side your car pulls towards is the side that has a working brake. This failure of the brake on one side could cause an accident. Two main failures can cause a brake failure like this. Your calipers should activate when you depress the brake pedal, and they squeeze against the rotors to stop your Ford. A worn or damaged caliper may not engage, and this prevents the brake on that side from working. A blockage in the brake hose can prevent brake fluid from flowing to the caliper to provide the power to engage the caliper.
